Of course, sometimes the techniques didn't work in high school either. But I think a lot of time the students can't hear what they're being asked to do because they've never been expected to do it before.

For instance, sometimes they just regurgitate information from what they've read instead of critiquing it because they can't believe that they're really supposed to include their own insights.

They don't always realize that they need help, even when they're not doing well. They might misidentify their problems (thinking that it's a grammar issue, for instance) and just keep hammering away doing the same thing.Amyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01083810327473667268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8364292270806515455.post-145846365807666212007-02-02T15:10:00.000-06:002007-02-02T15:10:00.000-06:00What I had tried to say in my unsuccessful attempt...What I had tried to say in my unsuccessful attempt at a comment was a note of appreciation and understanding for the lack of content you have noticed in student writing. I too have noticed many students struggling with writing for content. Is it a lack of understanding in their topic, intimidation of asking the teacher for help, or just the intimidation of writing?Teacher: Gabe Isackson e-mail: gisackson@spsmail.orghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07772582458039960555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8364292270806515455.post-19523212186761066642007-02-02T14:56:00.000-06:002007-02-02T14:56:00.000-06:00Sorry for the sloppy comment - I rushed.Sorry for the sloppy comment - I rushed.Teacher: Gabe Isackson e-mail: gisackson@spsmail.orghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07772582458039960555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8364292270806515455.post-44687824252013356412007-02-02T14:54:00.000-06:002007-02-02T14:54:00.000-06:00This comment has been removed by the author.Teacher: Gabe Isackson e-mail: gisackson@spsmail.orghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07772582458039960555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8364292270806515455.post-31772227420894102722007-01-31T21:15:00.000-06:002007-01-31T21:15:00.000-06:00They should go to Drury. I'm pretty sure you can graduate without touching the English department (though literature courses satisfy part of a history requirement and writing courses satisfy part of a creativity requirement).Amyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01083810327473667268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8364292270806515455.post-73806423559363854572007-01-31T20:46:00.000-06:002007-01-31T20:46:00.000-06:00I think that using the word "motivation" as being ...I think that using the word "motivation" as being the key to their success is right on. I have seen too many high school students fail assignments just because of lack of motivation. However, when I speak to them about college, they seem to believe that they will breeze right through. I can't imagine the shock they must go through once they find out how many English courses they will need to take in order to graduate.S00nerfan1https://www.blogger.com/profile/09083015072608883451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8364292270806515455.post-19015838895091121582007-01-31T20:41:00.000-06:002007-01-31T20:41:00.000-06:00This comment has been removed by the author.S00nerfan1https://www.blogger.com/profile/09083015072608883451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8364292270806515455.post-33802553852810796932007-01-30T17:54:00.000-06:002007-01-30T17:54:00.000-06:00I agree that this is would be a refreshing differe...I agree that this is would be a refreshing difference between high school and college. The college students should have more motivation to succeed. Great point.Reader1https://www.blogger.com/profile/00999404358272338777noreply@blogger.com
